PRADCO Outdoor Brands, a longtime leader in bass fishing circles with prominent names such as Arbogast, Bandit, Bomber, Heddon, Lindy, Thill, YUM and more, now is a giant in the crappie lure category with its recent acquisition of the Bobby Garland crappie brand.

The Garland lineup, anchored by arguably the best selling of all soft plastic baits today — the Baby Shad — consists of 15 different body styles, dozens of colors, and some trend-setting accessories. All became part of PRADCO in September 2019, when it purchased Oklahoma-based Gene Larew Lures, a company that included the Larew, Crappie Pro and Garland brands.

“While many still label us a bass company, a lot of others have been paying attention to our growth in recent times through species diversification,” said PRADCO’s Bruce Stanton, vice president and general manager of the fishing division, located in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. “Our Lindy, Thill and Bandit products are successful in the walleye and panfish markets, so crappie had been on our minds for a while.

“We were seeing the evolution of the sport and knew it was time to either create a crappie bait brand or acquire one, so given the opportunity to jump right to the top with Bobby Garland made the choice easy.”

Over the past dozen years, Garland’s Baby Shad has grown to become the predominant look and style over the tiny tube jigs that once was the industry staple for the species. During the same time, Garland has been continuously introducing more designs that are also having success at retail and in tackle boxes everywhere.

Today’s Garland offering has grown to a variety of shapes and sizes like the Slab Slay’R, Minnow Mind’R, Stroll’R, Slab Hunt’R Minnow and Itty Bit series. And accessory items have been added, too, including glass rattles, Slab Ticklers, Slab Jam and Pull Tabs.

With Garland came the Crappie Pro brand of premium jigheads. In it are high-quality, computer-balanced traditional designs featuring fine wire, super-sharp hooks, as well as some specialty models such as the Head Dockt’R.

“We’re in the crappie business,” Stanton said. “Ownership transitions always take time, but we’re moving steadily along. PRADCO is totally committed to this species and our related Garland, Crappie Pro, Thill and Bandit brands through a multitude of dedicated resources in product development, educational information and marketing focus. See for yourself in 2020.”

For anglers of all ages, crappies are one of the most popular gamefish species in North America.
