Wes Campbell

Wes Campbell, owner of Tru Turn hooks and a fishing industry stalwart, died unexpectedly of natural causes at his home on Dec. 28, 2019. He was 65.

Campbell was influential in the fishing industry for more than 45 years, according to Ron Stallings with TTI-Blakemore.

"His passion for relating to other people was that which others should follow," Stallings wrote on a Facebook post. "Wes’ activity in the church and helping others in the community was so impactful, he was awarded the Christ for King medal from the Catholic church.

"To be around Wes was to be showered in love, compassion for others and a ton of laughter. His loyalty to family, friends and the fishing industry was always shown through his words, donations and his love for Christ."

Campbell was remembered at a memorial service Jan. 3 at St. Bede's the Venerable Catholic Church in  Montgomery, Alabama.

Campbell owned Tru Turn, which was founded by his father, John, in Wetumpka, Alabama, in 1960. John Campbell worked at Maxwell Air Force Base and sorted punchcards; a bent paperclip helped keep them easily separated. While bass fishing one day a fish came off his hook near the boat and Campbell bent his hook similar to how he bent paperclips. The resulting "true turn" of a fish's power against the bend helped keep it hooked, and Tru Turn hooks was born.

Wes Campbell played a huge role in the success of Tru Turn and, as years went on, the acquision and success of the TTI Blakemore companies that include Road Runner, Reel Magic, Daiichi, Mr. Crappie and others. The company is still based in Wetumpka.

Campbell is survived by his wife, Kerry Campbell; son Ryon Campbell; daughter Taira Campbell; brothers Steve Campbell and Johnny Campbell. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Nellie Fuller Campbell and sister Patty Morgan Smith.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested in his name to be made to the following organizations Wes Campbell donated to and supported:

St. Vincent DePaul —

Future Fisherman Foundation —

K9 For Warriors  —
