As shown above, many fishing retailers display rods by brand, but is this really the best method to serve the customer?

A customer is interested in kicking the tires on a new baitcasting rod for throwing hollow-bodied frogs. He doesn’t have a brand preference, but tells you how much he’s looking to spend.

This hypothetical sales scenario mimics real ones that take place in your store daily, hopefully hourly. As you begin to help the customer, you already have a half-dozen rods in mind, but how easy is it to find those rods? 

I’ve been in retail stores that display fishing rods in every manner imaginable, including by brand (the most common method), length and even price. In my opinion, the method that makes the most sense is by fishing technique.

Think about it: Having rods arranged by fishing technique makes your job, and that of your sales team, much easier. It also makes it possible for customers to browse on their own and find the best rod for their needs.

Instead of having to walk down an aisle, trying to read the specs for various baitcasting rods, and perhaps having to visit two or three aisles, all the frogging rods are in one place. Simple. 

Let’s assume you stock six models of fishing rods specific for casting and retrieving hollow-bodies frogs; does in matter how you arrange those six heavy-duty sticks? My vote is by length, shortest to tallest, from left to right. I don’t have any earth-shattering insight as to why I prefer this method, but it worked well for me and my customers during my many years working fishing retail. In my experience, customers almost always had a price range in mind first, then length second. And forgive me if this is getting too deep in the weeds, but rods arranged by technique, and then by length, simply look sharp in the store.

Tip: Before closing the store each evening, have an employee visit the rod racks and move any fishing rods that ended up in the wrong area during the day. That way, the sales team is ready to roll the following day with all the fishing rods set up appropriately.
